Language Learning Review: Yearly Reflection Questions
7 Questions to Consider When Evaluating Your Language Learning Progress

In the final four to six weeks of each year, I've noticed my tendency to stray from my study schedule, acquire an excess of planners (much to the chagrin of the minimalist I aspire to be), and immerse myself into materials designed that’ll help me in the year ahead. While my initial intention was to discuss Dr. Andrew Huberman’s Goals Toolkit: How to Set & Achieve Your Goals with language learning, I’ve realized that setting objectives is a highly individual process and scrapped that draft. Instead, I’ve focused on year-end reflections.
🔬 Why Reflect? Scientifically Backed Benefits
Improved Language Skills: Reflecting on our language learning experiences can enhance various language skills, including speaking, writing, pronunciation, and negotiation. By analyzing our progress and identifying areas for improvement, we can make targeted efforts to enhance specific language skills. 1
Metacognitive Development: Reflection promotes our metacognition, which is the ability to think about our own thinking processes. By reflecting on our language learning journey, we develop metacognitive skills, such as self-awareness, self-regulation, and self-evaluation. This metacognitive awareness helps us become more effective and independent language learners.2
Deeper Understanding: Reflection encourages us to go beyond surface-level learning and develop a deeper understanding of the language. By analyzing our learning experiences, making connections between new and previously learned information, and identifying underlying principles, we can gain a more meaningful and comprehensive understanding of the language. 3
Motivation and Goal Setting: Reflecting on our language learning achievements and progress can boost our motivation and confidence. By recognizing our growth and setting new goals, we stay motivated and focused on our language learning journey.4
Transfer of Skills: Reflection has been identified as an important skill for our ability to transfer what we've learned to other skills. By reflecting on our language learning experiences, we can identify strategies, techniques, and knowledge that can apply to unfamiliar language tasks, promoting the transfer of skills.5
