Why I Created a Substack Language Learning Account
The resolve to embrace my Japanese learning journey 📚
Hello! It just dawned on me that I started this newsletter without even a proper introductory post! So, here it is! (ノw`*)
A Personalized Approach to Language Acquisition.
Over the past seven years, I have intermittently been learning Japanese. Despite living in Japan for longer than I have been studying the language, my progress remains relatively limited. This can be attributed to the following factors:
I used to work in English-only speaking jobs up to seven days a week before securing a full-time teaching position.
My full-time teaching position had a mentally taxing adjustment period where I had to be fully committed to learning the ropes.
I had few opportunities to expand my linguistic proficiency since my basic knowledge was useful enough to get by at work.
I
hadhavehad very questionable study habits and somehow believed that I could learn any language just by being ✨exposed✨ to it. 🤡
When I began my graduate studies in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), I found a strong connection with the English language learners we analyzed. Numerous valuable lessons could be integrated into my self-study routine, and I was consistently eager to discuss class readings and insights with others. However, not everyone I knew shared my interest in applied linguistics or second language acquisition. To create a safe space for exploring these topics, I started a language learning studygram. Then, thanks to Victoria from StudyNotepad, I discovered Substack, which enables me to share my insights regarding second-language research in a more extended format.
Delving into Second Language Research
A crucial aspect of this account is diving into second language research by discussing various techniques and strategies for effective learning, exploring scientific studies on second language acquisition, and examining linguistic theories. Writing about this helps:
Enhancing Understanding. Investigating linguistic theories and scientific findings enables both myself and subscribers to better understand the processes involved in second language acquisition.
Applying Knowledge. Learners can optimize their study habits by translating research insights into practical strategies for more effective language learning.
Inspiring Curiosity. Encouraging readers to explore different learning strategies sparks intellectual curiosity while enriching their language-learning experience.
The Benefits of Documenting My Japanese Learning Journey
Creating this newsletter to document my Japanese learning journey offers several advantages that I hope will encourage you to do the same.
Tracking Progress. Keeping a record of my achievements allows me to reflect on my challenges and how much I have grown as a learner.
Staying Accountable. Sharing my journey encourages me to remain committed and consistent in my language studies.
Connecting with Like-Minded Learners. Being in a community of people passionate about languages offers invaluable support and motivation through shared experiences and advice.
The Vision for this Newsletter
Readers can expect content that includes:
Insights into linguistic theories and research findings
Practical tips derived from scientific studies to enhance language learning
Updates on my progress in learning Japanese
Reflections on overcoming obstacles and celebrating milestones
By sharing my knowledge and journey about second language acquisition, I encourage fellow learners to embrace their linguistic adventures with enthusiasm, grace, and curiosity. Everyone's language learning journey is unique, and we all progress at our own speed. Nevertheless, discovering the most suitable techniques can greatly help us. Why don’t you try writing about your language-learning progress too?
P.S. I added a separate section called “Shea Sensei,” where I can write about living and teaching in Japan.
I made this a separate subscription in my newsletter since I know it’s not a topic everyone is interested in. However, an integral part of my reason for consistently learning Japanese has been because of my opportunity to work as a licensed public elementary school English teacher here. This eye-opening, ongoing experience teaches me much about intercultural communication and education systems. You can manage your subscription here if you want to read about my work-life reflections, observations, and everyday silliness. My students are the cutest. I have the Instagram highlight reels to prove it. ♡
Looking forward to reading more from you! It seems like haven't introduced myself either on substack... Oopsies!
Excited to read your newsletter!! :)
